Hold the AFP accountable

This petition of certain citizens of Australia draws to the attention of the Senate that:

  • Reputable human rights organisations report significant human rights violations committed by Indonesian police and military in West Papua;
  • These violations are committed with impunity;
  • The Australian Federal Police and Australian Defence Forces provide substantial support to the Indonesian police and military, including D88, Brimob and Kopassus, the worst human rights offenders;
  • The nature and extent of this support is not fully disclosed;
  • No conditionality or benchmarks are attached to this support to ensure Indonesian police and military respect human rights

We therefore ask the House to call on the Government to:

  • Condemn human rights violations everywhere, including in West Papua;
  • Vigorously raise concerns about human rights violations committed in West Papua with the Indonesian Government;
  • Take action at the United Nations to hold the Indonesian Government fully accountable for human rights violations committed by its security forces in West Papua;
  • Ensure that Australian Government aid does not enable human rights violations anywhere, including in West Papua;
  • Initiate an independent audit of the effectiveness and human rights risks associated with all programs involving Indonesian police and military receiving Australian Government funding.

    Governments have a responsibility for the well-being and concerns of all it’s people for all time. Harming people and damaging natural ecologies to ensure the power status quo of a nation will lead to uncontrollable natural disasters and extensive social failure. It is vital, for the well-being of all people in Indonesia and surrounding nations, to eradicate prejudice and authoritarianism from all policy and law.

    Australian political leaders should cease all aid, training and cooperation between the AFP and the ADF with the POLRI (Indonesian police) and the TNI (the Indonesian military) until:

    • the Indonesian government withdraws the TNI from West Papua

    • all POLRI and TNI mass murderers and violators are brought to justice

    • the Indonesian government pays reparations for all the damage caused by the TNI and POLRI and pays compensation to all their victims (in West Papua, East Timor, Acheh and Indonesia)

    During the current visit to Australia of Joko Widodo – the Indonesian President – Australia’s Foreign Minister – Marise Payne – claimed that Indonesia and Australia are strong democracies. Does her definition of a democratic state allow a nation that has committed genocide and sickening massive human rights abuses in its own country and other nations, has at least 2 war criminals in its cabinet and is basically controlled by a military that has committed such crimes?

    But then, former Australian leaders allowed many Nazi war criminals to live in Australia without doing anything to bring them to justice until it was too late. Some of them were actually members of the “Liberal” Party.

    The world community brought to justice many war criminals after WW2, in the old Yugoslavia and Rwanda so why not Indonesia?
