Hold the AFP accountable

This petition of certain citizens of Australia draws to the attention of the Senate that:

  • Reputable human rights organisations report significant human rights violations committed by Indonesian police and military in West Papua;
  • These violations are committed with impunity;
  • The Australian Federal Police and Australian Defence Forces provide substantial support to the Indonesian police and military, including D88, Brimob and Kopassus, the worst human rights offenders;
  • The nature and extent of this support is not fully disclosed;
  • No conditionality or benchmarks are attached to this support to ensure Indonesian police and military respect human rights

We therefore ask the House to call on the Government to:

  • Condemn human rights violations everywhere, including in West Papua;
  • Vigorously raise concerns about human rights violations committed in West Papua with the Indonesian Government;
  • Take action at the United Nations to hold the Indonesian Government fully accountable for human rights violations committed by its security forces in West Papua;
  • Ensure that Australian Government aid does not enable human rights violations anywhere, including in West Papua;
  • Initiate an independent audit of the effectiveness and human rights risks associated with all programs involving Indonesian police and military receiving Australian Government funding.

    Indonesia is not right to destroy West Papua,

    Australia is not right to support Indonesia in their rein of terror,

    Saying SORRY in a hundred years will not cut it , when we can effectively mke the differance today.

    Utterly shameful that Australian Federal Police forces are complicit, and even teach violent elements in West Papua and PNG how to perpetrate human rights abuses. The same counts for signing trade deals with Indonesia and celebrating how ‘great and good’ and ‘beneficial for our farmers’ this is while gays and lesbians are rounded up and send to ‘re-education institutions’ or publicly caned/lashed for their ‘sins’. Unethical politics by right wing liberals while also animals suffer horrendous torture and killing practices. Is that upholding ‘the Australian ways’ and fairness Mr. Morrison?

    Australia has a responsibility to uphold its obligations for international human rights. These are our neighbours and our close responsibility. We should not curry favour with one neighbour, who is committing crimes against another, just because they are bigger, stronger and have economic potential for Australia to do business.

    Australia must review its funding for Indonesia’s security services. Whatever aims that funding seeks to achieve (professionalism of Indonesia’s forces, etc.), the reality is that Indonesia’s special forces (particularly Brimob and Kopassus) carry out systematic human rights abuses against civilians in West Papua every day. Australia cannot be complicit in these abuses. We must do everything we can to secure the safety of West Papua’s people, rather than support Indonesia’s predatory state security apparatus.
